Limonium sinuatum is the botanical name for statice, also called sea lavender — the classic everlasting flower whose papery, jewel-bright clusters hold their colour for months once dried. It is the species behind our statice range within the flower seed collection.

History & origin

Native to the Mediterranean coast, statice has grown on sun-baked, salt-laden cliffs for millennia, and that toughness is exactly what makes it such a forgiving garden plant. Florists have prized it as a dried flower for generations.

The genus name Limonium comes from the Greek leimon, “meadow,” for the salt meadows where the wild plants grow; sinuatum means “wavy,” describing the winged, undulating stems.

Botanical characteristics

A short-lived perennial grown as an annual, statice forms rosettes that send up stiff, winged, branching stems topped with dense clusters of small, papery flowers in purple, blue, rose, yellow and white. Tough and sun-loving, it is one of our most dependable drought-tolerant flowers and the cornerstone of our dried flowers.
