Ground-cover flowers — low, spreading colour that fills gaps

Ground-cover flowers spread sideways to carpet bare soil, soften path edges and crowd out weeds, all while flowering low to the ground. Many are hard-working perennials and most are brilliant for feeding bees; they sit within our full flower seed range. New to flower sowing? Begin with the flower growing guide.

Covering a slope or bare patch? Sow at the right time for fast, even cover — the calendar shows when.

Where ground cover works best

Use low spreaders on slopes, between stepping stones, at the front of borders and over tricky dry corners. Sun-loving types overlap with rockery and alpine flowers, while nectar-rich varieties turn a flat carpet into a buzzing one. For balconies, the same trailing habit suits pots and window boxes.

Sowing and establishing

Clear weeds first — ground cover suppresses new ones but can't beat established roots. Sow into firmed soil, keep it damp while seedlings knit together (see the watering guide), and a light mulch between young plants speeds clean cover.

Want colour that returns each year? Lean on perennial and pollinator types for low-maintenance, come-back cover.

Popular flower categories: Rock Garden Flowers · Perennial Flowers · Pollinator Flowers · Bee-Friendly Flowers · Container Flowers

At SeedsChoice, every order ships from Meppel, NL with fast, tracked EU delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are ground-cover flowers?
Low, spreading plants that cover bare soil, fill gaps between paving and at border fronts, and suppress weeds while flowering.

Do they really stop weeds?
They suppress new weeds once they knit together, but you should clear existing weeds before sowing — ground cover can't beat established roots.

Are ground-cover flowers perennial?
Many are hardy perennials; some annual types self-seed to refill the carpet each year.

Will they grow on a slope?
Yes — they are ideal for binding soil and adding colour on banks and slopes.

Are they good for pollinators?
Many are nectar-rich and excellent for bees and other pollinators.
